For some people, the journey towards becoming a parent is a breeze. For some, however, it can be pretty tough. Further, this scenario is precisely what happened to Nia Vardalos until she became Ilaria’s mom. According to the actress, the process of becoming a mother took her nine painful years to achieve after battling several complications with her fertility. Using her investment money, the actress and her former husband, Ian Gomez, exhausted all medical options they had to have a child.

Unfortunately, none of them worked for the actress. That’s when the two started looking into adopting. Then, sometime between 2008-2009, Nia and Ian finally became parents to 3-year-old Ilaria. The process was not easy, but the wait was worth it. Ilaria is already 16 years old today, but not much is known about the teenager as her parents are both indifferent about their private lives.
